-> Scoliosis is an abnormal curve of spine. It may look C or S shaped curve. It often affects girls. It can be present at birth (cogenital). It can also be present in neuro-muscular conditions or genetic conditions which affects muscle strength.
Scoliosis is often referred to a cosmetic deformity. It can affect the function. If curve is large enough to impinge the nerve causing pain or affects cardio-pulmanory or cardio-vascular function.
-> a) Infantile Idiopathic Scoliosis (IIS) age 0 - 3 years.
b) Juevenile Idiopathic Scoliosis (JIS) age 4 - 9 years.
c) Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) age > 9 years.
d) Adult scoliosis due to degeneration of spine.
-> X-ray of front and side view is taken and angle of the curve is measured. If the cobb angle more than 10 degree is diagnosed, it is scoliosis.
-> - Scoliosis causes vertebrae to deviate and rotate in a different direction
- Rib cage is elongated and broadened on the concave side and sharp angled on the convex side
- There is hypokyphosis at thoracic
- There is hypolordosis in lumbar
- There is hyperlordosis in lumbosacral region
- There is a possibility of scapula and pelvis tilting
- There is a side shift of spine forming primary and secondary curves
-> - Scoliometer reading
- Therapy includes an appropriate plan of exercises for primary and secondary curves.
- Breathing and elongation
- Assessment and Correction did in all planes of motion of the body
- mobilization and stabilization of the spine
- Correction of postural habits
- Individualized & home exercise program
-> - Pain management with NSAID, facet joint/epidural injections, acupuncture, massage therapy.
- General conditioning improving core strength, cardiovascular and pulmonary functions.
- General relaxation and postural training.
