Pelvic pain can occur for a number of reasons. This type of pain can be limiting and, for some people, even a bit embarrassing. It can hinder your daily life and prevent you from doing some of your daily tasks or activities you love.Pelvic floor plays a key role in bladder and bowel control because it’s responsible for “holding” those organs.  Problems with pelvic floor can affect woman with urinary incontinence , bowel dysfunction, sexual problems and participating in sports and recreational activities. Pelvic floor problems can also affect  teenage athletes who participate in high impact sports. You can experience  groin pain, abdominal pain, constipation, pain with sex, painful periods, vaginal pain etc. can occur due to pelvic floor muscles that are too tight or spasm, inflamed pelvic floor nerves and restricted connective tissue. When there is a restriction in blood flow to your muscles, there is limited oxygen as well which can cause your pain.Fortunately, pelvic floor rehabilitation can help ease your symptoms of pelvic dysfunction and strengthen your pelvic floor muscles so you don’t experience additional problems in the future.

The treatments involved in your pelvic floor rehabilitation plan will be dependent upon the results of your initial assessment. Your injury or condition will be evaluated during a physical examination, and then a qualified physical therapist will form a treatment plan that will address your specific needs. Your physical assessment will most likely begin with examination of your abdominal muscles, pelvis and lumbar spine – these structures house your all important pelvic floor muscles; a dysfunction in one of these areas can result in dysfunction elsewhere. If appropriate, you may then be offered an internal examination. This is an important part of your assessment and necessary in identifying the tone, strength and control of your pelvic floor musclesThis will typically include several forms of exercise and massage to reduce pain, lessen symptoms, and potentially heal your condition.
